Understanding AKN
Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes raised, inflamed papules, pustules, and eventually keloid-like scarring at the back of the neck and lower scalp.
It predominantly affects men of African and Caribbean descent with tightly coiled or curly hair. Despite the name, it is not related to acne vulgaris. It is a distinct follicular condition that, if left untreated, can lead to permanent scarring and irreversible hair loss.
Common triggers include close barbering, friction from collars, heat, and ingrown hairs. Most barbers are not trained to recognise or manage AKN, which means clients are often unknowingly having it worsened at every appointment.

Who is affected
AKN is significantly underdiagnosed, with many men dismissing it as "razor bumps" or general irritation. It is estimated to affect up to 9% of Black men, yet specialist barbering support for the condition remains rare in the UK.
AKN is often mistaken for razor bumps, folliculitis, or general irritation. Here's what to look for, and why it matters to get the right care early.
Small, firm papules or pustules forming a line across the back of the neck and lower scalp, often itchy or tender.
Over time, repeated inflammation causes keloid-like plaques: thick, raised scar tissue that doesn't resolve on its own.
Shaving too close to the neckline or using clippers without a guard directly aggravates AKN and accelerates scarring.
Episodes that seem to clear up and then return, often worse after haircuts, a key sign that the cause isn't being addressed.
In advanced cases, AKN causes permanent, localised hair loss at the neckline as scar tissue replaces hair follicles.
Many men are told it's just razor bumps or acne. If you've been treating it as such with no improvement, AKN is worth investigating.

Most clients move to occasional top-up sessions once the intensive course is complete, keeping the condition settled and the neckline protected.

Your home care kit does half the work. AKN doesn't improve on studio sessions alone. The daily home care between visits is where results are built. That's why it's included in every programme, not sold as an extra. Full instructions come with your kit.

It depends how far along it is, and I am not going to guarantee you an outcome either way.
Caught early, while it is still inflamed bumps and the follicles have not been permanently damaged, the skin can settle right down and in some cases go on to look clear. You will find before and after images online showing exactly that, and it is possible.
Where it has already hardened into raised, keloid-like scar tissue, that is a different situation. Established scarring does not simply dissolve, and anyone promising you it will is overselling.
So the honest answer is that early AKN often responds very well, established scarring becomes about control rather than clearance, and consistent home care makes a real difference to both. I will tell you which one you are dealing with when I assess you, rather than sell you a result I cannot promise.
No, though it gets mistaken for them constantly. Razor bumps are ingrown hairs that settle once the hair grows out. AKN is a chronic inflammatory condition that forms firm papules along the neckline and, left alone, hardens into keloid-like scar tissue that does not resolve on its own. If your bumps keep returning in the same place and never fully clear, it is worth having it looked at properly.
Where the follicles are still intact, calming the inflammation gives the hair its best chance. Where scar tissue has already replaced the follicle, that hair loss is permanent and no treatment reverses it. I will always be straight with you about which of those we are dealing with when I assess you, rather than promising regrowth that is not coming.
Yes, and that is rather the point. Most men with AKN are having it aggravated at every appointment without realising. I adjust the cut instead of stopping it: no close work over the affected area, no clippers tight to the neckline, no friction across active inflammation. You leave looking sharp without the flare-up afterwards.
Most clients notice the skin calming down, less itching, less soreness and fewer new bumps, within the first few sessions. Flattening established scar tissue takes considerably longer. Six sessions is the initial window where we assess how your skin responds, and you get baseline and progress photographs so you can judge it for yourself rather than take my word for it.
For mild cases, often not. For moderate to severe AKN, yes, and I will say so. I do not diagnose or prescribe. What I provide is specialist barbering and skincare support that works alongside medical treatment. Plenty of men have already been given a cream by their GP, but nobody has told them their barbering routine was undoing it.
It is still worth getting assessed. With more established cases the goal shifts from clearing bumps to stopping it spreading, settling the inflammation and protecting what is left. If it is beyond what I should be working on alone, I will tell you and point you toward medical support rather than take your money.
Because the results depend on it. The studio sessions are roughly half the work and the daily routine between visits is the other half. When home care is treated as an optional extra, the men who skip it get worse results and then reasonably conclude the treatment does not work. Including it means everyone starts on the same footing.
We review your before and after photographs together and decide honestly whether continuing is worth it. Most men move onto occasional top-up sessions at £65 each to keep things settled, booked as and when they need them. There is no ongoing commitment and no contract.
That is fine. Sessions run every one to two weeks and the spacing is set to your grade, so milder cases can comfortably stretch to fortnightly. If your schedule means longer gaps than that, tell me at the consultation and we will plan around it rather than you starting something you cannot finish.
The programme is paid in full at your first session, and I do not offer finance directly. That said, plenty of clients choose to spread the cost through their own bank or credit provider, which works exactly like paying by card at the studio. That arrangement sits between you and them, and makes no difference to your treatment either way. If cost is the sticking point, say so at your consultation and we will look at what works.
