One of the most common questions we get asked during consultations is how long a hair unit will last. The honest answer: it depends on the base type, your lifestyle and how well you maintain it.
Base type lifespans
- Lace base — typically 4–6 months with proper care. The fine mesh is breathable and comfortable but more delicate than PU or hybrid options.
- PU skin base — can last 6–12 months. More durable than lace, bonds flat to the scalp and holds up well to active lifestyles.
- Hybrid base — varies by construction, but typically 5–9 months. The lace hairline area may wear faster than the PU crown.
What shortens the lifespan
- Using the wrong adhesive remover — harsh solvents can break down the base material
- Sleeping without protecting the hairline — friction causes the lace to fray
- Washing too aggressively or too infrequently
- Exposure to chlorine (swimming pools) without rinsing immediately afterwards
With correct maintenance, many of our clients get significantly more time than the baseline estimates above. The hair itself can also be replaced on some bases — extending the life of the base itself.
