Hair Unit
Base Options

Understanding the different base types is key to choosing the right hair unit for your lifestyle. Here's a breakdown of each option, including the advantages and disadvantages for afro and curly hair.

01

Lace Base

Most Breathable

The lace base uses fine mesh material throughout, with hair tied directly into it. The hairline is virtually invisible thanks to the natural-looking lace — it blends seamlessly with your skin and is one of the most popular choices for afro and curly hair units. The mesh construction allows air to circulate, making it comfortable for all-day wear.

Advantages

  • Highly breathable — great for active lifestyles and those who sweat a lot
  • Natural-looking hairline — virtually undetectable
  • Hair can be cut short without revealing the base
  • Styles like braids or dreads are more achievable
  • Comfortable for sensitive scalps

Disadvantages

  • Maintenance typically required every 2 weeks
  • Water and sweat can penetrate the base, reducing adhesive hold
  • Base can rip or tear if not handled carefully
  • Threads can loosen over time
  • Adhesive can sometimes stick through the lace to the hair

02

PU Skin Base

Most Durable

PU (polyurethane) skin bases are the thinnest and most durable option. Ultra-thin skin systems use v-loop ventilation which creates a very natural look while keeping the base lightweight. The skin base creates a direct bond with the scalp and is generally easier to maintain than lace — it can stay on for 3 to 4 weeks with the right adhesive.

Advantages

  • Very durable — lasts longer than the advertised timeframe
  • Strong bond — can stay on 3 to 4 weeks
  • Creates a barrier between hair and scalp
  • Easier to clean than lace
  • Good for active lifestyles and sports

Disadvantages

  • Not breathable — can feel warm in hot weather
  • Can be uncomfortable if you sweat heavily
  • Base may be visible if hair is cut very short
  • Less natural-looking hairline than lace

03

Hybrid Base

Best of Both

The hybrid base combines lace at the hairline with PU skin or mono across the top of the base. This gives you the benefit of an undetectable natural hairline from the lace, combined with the durability and security of a skin or mono base. It's the most popular all-round choice and suits a wide range of lifestyles.

Advantages

  • Natural-looking lace hairline
  • More durable than a full lace base
  • Good balance of breathability and longevity
  • Suits most lifestyles and hair types

Disadvantages

  • More complex construction — can be harder to repair
  • Not as breathable as a full lace base
  • Slightly heavier than a full lace unit
