Specialist Skincare
for Men Who
Take It Seriously.

Specialist skincare and treatment support for Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN) — a chronic skin condition disproportionately affecting Black men with curly hair. At Carter Creative, we understand your skin because we understand your hair.

Understanding AKN

What is Acne Keloidalis Nuchae?

Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes raised, inflamed papules, pustules, and eventually keloid-like scarring at the back of the neck and lower scalp.

It predominantly affects men of African and Caribbean descent with tightly coiled or curly hair. Despite the name, it is not related to acne vulgaris — it is a distinct follicular condition that, if left untreated, can lead to permanent scarring and irreversible hair loss.

Common triggers include close barbering, friction from collars, heat, and ingrown hairs. Most barbers are not trained to recognise or manage AKN — which means clients are often unknowingly having it worsened at every appointment.

At Carter Creative, we have the specialist knowledge to work with your condition, not against it.

Who is affected

AKN by the numbers

AKN is significantly underdiagnosed, with many men dismissing it as "razor bumps" or general irritation. It is estimated to affect up to 9% of Black men — yet specialist barbering support for the condition remains rare in the UK.

  • Primarily affects men of African and Caribbean descent
  • Tightly coiled, curly hair significantly increases risk
  • Often triggered or worsened by close shaving near the neckline
  • Causes permanent scarring and localised hair loss if untreated
  • Can begin in teenage years and worsen without proper care
  • Rarely discussed openly — many men suffer in silence

Signs You May Have AKN

AKN is often mistaken for razor bumps, folliculitis, or general irritation. Here's what to look for — and why it matters to get the right care early.

🔴

Raised bumps at the neckline

Small, firm papules or pustules forming a line across the back of the neck and lower scalp — often itchy or tender.

📈

Progressive scarring

Over time, repeated inflammation causes keloid-like plaques — thick, raised scar tissue that doesn't resolve on its own.

💈

Worsened by close barbering

Shaving too close to the neckline or using clippers without a guard directly aggravates AKN and accelerates scarring.

🔁

Recurrent flare-ups

Episodes that seem to clear up and then return, often worse after haircuts — a key sign that the cause isn't being addressed.

🧬

Thinning or bald patches

In advanced cases, AKN causes permanent, localised hair loss at the neckline as scar tissue replaces hair follicles.

Misdiagnosed or dismissed

Many men are told it's just razor bumps or acne. If you've been treating it as such with no improvement, AKN is worth investigating.

Our Approach

How Carter Creative supports AKN clients

We approach every AKN client with care, adjusting our barbering technique to avoid further aggravation — no close shaving near the affected area, no friction, no unnecessary contact with active inflammation.

Using professional, science-backed skincare, we support skin health and manage inflammation in conjunction with your haircut and grooming appointment. We can also advise on home maintenance between visits.

  • Technique adjusted to protect the affected area
  • Professional skincare applied to support healing and reduce inflammation
  • Honest advice on triggers to avoid between appointments
  • Home maintenance guidance and product recommendations

Important to know

We work alongside your GP or dermatologist

Carter Creative does not provide medical diagnosis or prescribe medication for AKN. In moderate to severe cases, we strongly recommend working alongside a GP or dermatologist.

What we offer is specialist barbering and skincare support — adjusting how we work with your hair and skin to avoid making the condition worse, while actively supporting skin health using professional skincare products and treatments.

For many men, this is the missing piece. They've seen a GP. They've been given a cream. But nobody has told them how their barbering routine is making it worse.

That's where we come in.
